Landstuhl Students Design Principal's Challenge Coin
Landstuhl, Germany - Landstuhl Elementary School has officially crowned the winners of its Principal’s Challenge Coin design contest, held in celebration of the Month of the Military Child. First-grader Theo designed the front of the coin, while second-grader Ellie designed the back. On Friday, Dr. Bade presented the very first physical coins to these two talented students for their historic creative teamwork. Upon receiving his prize, Theo shared his excitement, saying, "This is cool. It looks like real gold."
Challenge coins carry a rich history of camaraderie and identity within the United States Armed Forces. While several legends exist, the most popular origin story dates back to World War I. A wealthy lieutenant ordered solid bronze medallions for his squadron before deployment. When one pilot was shot down behind enemy lines and escaped to French lines without identification, the bronze coin around his neck proved his alliance and saved his life. Over the decades, these coins became a staple of military culture. Today, commanders use them to boost morale, honor excellence, and signify membership in an elite unit. Civilians and military members alike carry them as a badge of honor and a symbol of shared courage and commitment to the mission.
LES has adapted this respected military custom to honor our resilient student body. Thanks to the generosity of the LES PTSA, which funded the production of the coins, Dr. Bade now has a unique token to distribute for special recognition. Moving forward, these student-designed coins will be awarded to individuals who demonstrate the special qualities associated with such an honor. Congratulations to Theo and Ellie for leaving a lasting mark on our school culture.
