As we move into February, we have several days off but the learning never stops. Teaching our students self-regulation is important:
What is self-regulation? It is the ability to manage emotions and behavior in accordance with the demands of the situation. It includes being able to resist highly emotional reactions to upsetting situations, to calm yourself down when you get upset, to adjust to a change in expectations, and to handle frustration without an outburst. To support children’s self-regulation, coach them through difficult situations and provide a supportive framework. Scaffold desired behaviors until they can manage on their own.
Use dry runs for practice, like short store visits to manage impulsive reactions. Try "First... Then..." methods (e.g., "First clean your room, then play video games") and positively reinforce successes. Consistency is key. Start at an appropriate level and gradually increase independence. Encourage self-reflection and approach meltdowns calmly, offering non-judgmental feedback on what went wrong and how to improve. These steps help students become self-reliant and help with self-control.

"Parents are busy...they may not know how to do what we do here...this is the most powerful thing a parent can do, and it starts at birth."

Nurse's Nudge
This time of year, washing your hands often can lead to super dry, cracked, and painful hands. So in addition to that sanitizer spray you carry around with you, carry a tiny tube of lotion too...oh, and maybe some ChaptStick. Our lips start looking a little rough in winter! Want a little more incentive to wash those hands? Try singing!
